Aviad (Everlasting Father)

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Isaiah 9:6

Many of you may have negative memories of a father.  Maybe your earthly father was the one that caused your trauma.  Maybe he was just not everything that you dreamed a father could be.  The good thing is that God is a perfect father.  He is everything you ever dreamed / wanted in a father.

Translated literally this name is “Father of Eternity”.  In Hebrew, ‘father’ is the noun and ‘everlasting’ describes His fatherhood.  Let’s first look at the word ‘everlasting’.

The emphasis of this verse is looking forward.  This means that ‘everlasting’ is a better translation than the word ‘eternal’.  Eternal includes that He is without beginning.  This is, in fact, true of God, but not the emphasis here.  This emphasizes that He is without end.  There are several facts in Scripture about God’s everlastingness.  He has everlasting arms:

The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms. He will drive out your enemies before you, saying, ‘Destroy them!’

Deuteronomy 33:27

Everlasting consolation:

May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope,

2 Thessalonians 2:16

Everlasting power:

who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen.

1 Timothy 6:16

Everlasting kingdom:

Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures through all generations. The LORD is trustworthy in all he promises and faithful in all he does.

Psalm 145:13

Everlasting presence:

And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Matthew 28:20

As we think about what a father is supposed to do for his family, he is supposed to protect and provide for his family.  We know that some earthly fathers don’t do that, but God does.  The verse from Isaiah shows us that Jesus will be a father and protect and provide for the children of Israel.  As believers in Christ, Scripture teaches that we are grafted into the people of Israel and will also get those same benefits.

One thing that makes God a better father than earthly fathers … is that He is everlasting.  He is not limited by death or aging.

He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life.  Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children.

Revelation 21:6-7

The Bible is also clear that He will never leave us!

Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”

Hebrews 13:5

Some people get confused and think that this implies some confusion between the 1st and 2nd persons of the Trinity, but this verse is only showing Christ’s character toward us.  Jesus also taught that He can reveal God’s fatherly character.

I and the Father are one… But if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father.

John 10:30, 38

Jesus can fulfill those deepest desires that we have for a loving, protecting Father.  He can and does protect us and provide for us, even when our earthly fathers may fail.  Hallelujah!  Thank you, for being an Everlasting Father.
