El Gibbor (Mighty God)

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Isaiah 9:6

Who is your favorite superhero?  Mine?  I have LOVED Wonder Woman from the early years of my life when Linda Carter was Wonder Woman.  There have been some amazing quotes from the last couple of movies.  One of the best, in my opinion, is:  “What one does when faced with the truth is more difficult than you’d think.”  Another is:  “I will fight for those who cannot fight for themselves.”  This tells us about our next name for God.

Once again we find this name in Isaiah 9:6.  Many of the Scripture passages using this name use military language.  They use this word in reference to human warriors, such as David.  In doing so, they point to God as a Great Warrior.

These are the names of David’s mighty warriors: Josheb-Basshebeth, a Tahkemonite, was chief of the Three; he raised his spear against eight hundred men, whom he killed in one encounter.

2 Samuel 23:8

The Greek word that is used to translate this is dunatos, which means “one who possesses power, one who has ability to perform some act, having the ability to alter or control circumstances.  There are several verses about His might.

The LORD will march out like a champion, like a warrior he will stir up his zeal; with a shout he will raise the battle cry and will triumph over his enemies.

Isaiah 42:13

Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle.

Psalm 24:8

It also refers to Him teaching us to fight.

Praise be to the LORD my Rock, who trains my hands for war, my fingers for battle.

Psalm 144:1

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

Ephesians 6:12

There is nothing that is too difficult for Him.

“Ah, Sovereign LORD, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you. You show love to thousands but bring the punishment for the parents’ sins into the laps of their children after them. Great and mighty God, whose name is the LORD Almighty,

Jeremiah 32:17-18

God even encouraged Mary that He can do the impossible.  (Luke 1:34-37)

The wind and the waves obey Him:

He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.

Mark 4:39

This points to the day when all of His enemies will be vanquished and every knee will bow at His feet.

that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Philippians 2:10-11

But He who is Mighty also cares about you!

“The LORD your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.”

Zephaniah 3:17

Are you facing what seems like a mountain of difficulty?  Do you have an impossible situation in front of you?  Dealing with trauma can definitely seem like an impossible situation.  When God allows us to face an impossible situation, we need to keep our eyes fixed on Him.  Peter begins to walk on water (Matthew 14) and the second he takes his eyes off of Jesus and puts it on the waves, he begins sinking.
