Elohim Chayim

My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the LORD; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God.

Psalm 84:2

“My God’s not dead
He’s surely alive
He’s living on the inside
Roaring like a lion”

Have you heard that song? How about the movies? Have you seen the movies? The premise behind the movies is to prove that God’s not dead. In the first movie, a student enters a philosophy class taught by an atheist. The professor says that he will not argue the existence of God, instead he just wants all of the students to accept that God doesn’t exist, so they can move on. This one student sets out to prove that God does exist and he is alive. Of course he succeeds and many members of the class believe (as well as the professor at the end).

We serve a God who is living! Chayim is plural for life. Elohim Chayim means “Living God”. He is active and engaged in our everyday life. There are so many Scriptures that point to the fact that God is indeed alive. The Israelites were given proof of our Living God before they entered the Promised Land:

This is how you will know that the living God is among you and that he will certainly drive out before you the Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites and Jebusites.

Joshua 3:10

So many times Jesus promised that He was alive. This is one example:

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die.”

John 11:25

Plus, He did raise from the dead. He conquered death. 1 Corinthians 15 is all about the death and resurrection of Jesus. Read that when you get a chance!

“Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?”  The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.   But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Corinthians 15:55-57

The Sunday after my mom died, we observed The Lord’s Supper (Communion or Eucharist in other Christian traditions). I fell apart. I was so overwhelmed by the emotions that I couldn’t keep it in. Yes, I was sad about my mom’s death. But there was so much more than that! I was overwhelmed by the sacrifice that Jesus made. He made a sacrifice that provided the way for me to see my mom again one day. He gave up everything, and died on the cross. He rose again! Because of that, and because my mom trusted Him as her Savior and Lord. Because I have trusted Him as my Savior and Lord, I will see her again. All because He is alive!

So many people serve the wrong thing. Many people serve money or education. Some serve a false god. None of those things provide that hope that we have that exists because God is alive. The Christian faith is based on the reality that Jesus is alive! Even when our dreams don’t seem to come true, we face trauma and obstacles that cause us to lose hope. We can hold on to the hope of Jesus Christ and His death and resurrection. Hallelujah! He came and was born a baby knowing that it would eventually bring Him to the cross. What a great Living God we serve!
