Yahweh Nissi

Then the LORD said to Moses, “Write this on a scroll as something to be remembered and make sure that Joshua hears it, because I will completely blot out the name of Amalek from under heaven.”  Moses built an altar and called it The LORD is my Banner.  He said, “Because hands were lifted up against  the throne of the LORD,  the LORD will be at war against the Amalekites from generation to generation.”

Exodus 17:14-16

Going into battle looks very different today than it did years ago. Even at the beginning of the United States, an army going into battle would actually follow a “banner” or flag from that country. They were following the banner into battle. It was the idea of following the authority of the ruler of their country.

The meaning of this name is “The LORD my banner”. He is everything that His people need. A banner in those days was not the picture of a banner that we think of today. A banner was something that was conspicuous, glistened, or shined. This banner was a bare pole with a bright, shining ornament on it, which glittered in the sun. It is the authority by which we enter the battle of life. We know that life is a battle. In fact we read about how to prepare for that battle in many places throughout Scripture, including Ephesians 6:

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.  Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.  For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

Ephesians 6:10-12

Perhaps, one of the best descriptions of Jesus in this role is found in the book of Matthew 28:

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.  Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Matthew 28:18-20

We can face life’s battles with confidence when we keep our eyes on our “banner”. God has all the authority, He cannot lose. He gives us the victory. We can be assured when we follow God that we will see victory. There is a song that really ministers to my heart right now called, “Battle Belongs” by Phil Wickham. Later in the song, We find this verse:

Almighty fortress, You go before us
Nothing can stand against the power of our God
You shine in the shadow, You win every battle
Nothing can stand against the power of our God

Go and listen to that song and remember that the LORD is My Banner!
